"She's beautiful, natural Hanging in the diner, basking in the light She's beauty, yeah, the girl's cooking in the diner today" (Widespread Panic) My monthly luncheon with my brother brought us to the Acropolis Diner in New Haven. It was very easy to find (right on Dixwell Avenue) with lots of parking on the left side and in the back It's a very traditional diner with a traditionally large diner menu, plus lunch specials and meal specials. We grabbed a booth in the front and a coffee for me and an ice water for him came out super fast. I wasn't very hungry, so I looked at the breakfast sandwich menu and zeroed in on their Mexican Burrito Wrap ($9.75) with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, bacon, avocado, onions, and salsa. No sides were served with it. I thought it was very good -the eggs were nice and moist, the bacon was crispy, and the avocado was ripe. Portion size was good too - so I had zero complaints. My brother ordered the Hot Appetizer Sampler ($14.00). It was a huge platter built for two with fried zucchini stickes, mozzarella sticks, and chicken tenders over lettuce, served with marinara sauce and honey mustard. He barely made a dent in it and took home the leftovers in a to-go box. Our server was pleasant and efficient and prompt with my coffee refills. We really enjoyed our luncheon.
If you're looking for a weekday brunch, Acropolis has great options, including the ability to make mimosas. We stopped in spontaneously on an early Monday morning. I was feeling for a savory option, so Crab Cakes Benedict with hard poached eggs and home fries. And as mentioned, a mimosa. The food and service were both good. I've passed this diner too many times to count, and I was glad to finally stop in.
I was so pleased with my meal tonight. I stopped in just to get a nice warm bowl of chicken and pasta soup, but I ended up staying longer and ordered their amazing seasonal chocolate chip, pumpkin and pecan nut pancakes. They were incredible! I enjoyed it so much. I will be planning to come back tomorrow while here visiting for work! This is a must go to place- huge menu, amazing staff, friendly and so clean. They've been in business since 1974- they have perfected it well done Acropolis Diner!
